The era in Philadephia was doomed from the very beginning when Paul Holmgren gave an already declining player (one that just had his previous contract bought out) to a five-year, $22 million dollar deal in free agency. Predictably, it did not go well for either side. After trying to trade him and that contract for two years now, the finally found a taker on Thursday afternoon. That is when they traded Lecavalier, along with defenseman to the in exchange Quincy Williams Jersey for a third-round draft pick and prospect . Adding another layer of intrigue to the deal is the fact that Lecavalier's agent, Ken Hughes, told TSN's Bob McKenzie that it his clients intention to play the remainder of the season with the Kings and then retire. Because the Kings were already close to the salary cap, and Lecavalier and Schenn combine for more than $8 million in cap space this season, the Flyers will be retaining 50 percent of both contracts according to Freidman. Lecavalier's contract still runs for two more seasons beyond this one. Even though Weal, a 2010 draft pick by the Kings, has put up some impre sive Noah Dawkins Jersey numbers in the American Hockey League over the past two years, the key to this trade for the Flyers is simply clearing cap space. That is something current general manager Ron Hextall has been doing a lot of over the past year in an effort to clean up the me s left behind by Holmgren. Over Braxton Berrios Jersey the past year he has already dealt Niklas Gro smann, the remaining years of Chris Pronger's contract, and now Lecavalier and Schenn. The No. 1 pick in 1998 by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Lecavalier was never quite the mega-star that he was expected to be at the time of his selection, but he has still put together a pretty strong career that includes a Stanley Cup (2003-04 with the Lightning) and a 52-goal season in 2006-07. In recent years his production has rapidly declined and it reached the point in Philadelphia over the past two seasons where he couldn't even crack their lineup under two different coaches, playing in just 64 games since the start of last season. He appeared in just seven games for the team this year. Schenn, a former Keyshawn Johnson Jersey top-five pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs, was acquired by the team a few years ago in exchange for forward , and even though he never quite lived up to the post-draft hype, he has been, at the very least, a capable defender with a large contract. He Quincy Enunwa Jersey is a free agent after this season. The Kings had been looking to add another defender to their roster, and even though Schenn's contract turned out to be a costly one for the Flyers, he is not a terrible addition for half of a season at half of the cap hit. It's a little more difficult to see what the Kings want with Lecavalier, who is clearly a shell of his former self at this point in his career. Vincent Lecavalier is on his way to the Los Angeles Kings. (USATSI)
